Quest 2 Keeps Forgetting/Not Saving Guardian
While Quest 2 is certainly an amazing piece of technology, it does come with its own set of bugs. A common bug that has been around since Quest 2’s release is when your guardian randomly disappears.
Why Is My Quest 2 Not Saving Guardian Settings?
Because pretty much anything that involves tracking and remembering the area for your Quest 2 is related to sensors, there are several reasons why your guardian is not saved. This is usually due to some kind of changes in the environment that you are playing in, such as:
- moved furniture
- changed wall decorations
- people moving through your play area
- external lighting is making the play area look different
- the indoor light source has been moved to somewhere else
How To Fix Quest 2 Not Saving Guardian
When it comes to fixing this issue, you can try a few different things.
1. Clear the Guardian Cache
To clear the guardian cache, follow these steps:
- Press the Oculus Button to open up the universal menu
- Open settings -> Navigate to “Guardian”
- Select clear guardian history.
Clearing the guardian history can also help remove jitters you might be experiencing. It’s good to clear the guardian cache every once in a while.
2. Keep the play area in the same state
Making changes to your play area can prompt your Quest 2 not to recognize that you used to have a guardian saved there. This usually happens if you change the carpet, move some furniture around, or add some posters to the wall.
It is best to have an area dedicated to VR where you will not have to think much about if moving things around is going to be an issue.
3. Look around your room for a bit
If you put on your Quest 2 and move your head around, you will have better odds of the device recognizing some familiar locations that help it remember the guardian.
4. Make sure the lighting is good
Lighting plays a major role in your guardian being saved, just like it does with tracking. Make sure the area is bright enough for the tracking system to detect the points of interest it recorded for your previous guardian. Avoid having any sunlight or bright inside light in your play area.
By making the lighting just right, you will not have a better chance of your guardian loading up, but you will notice that your tracking is much better too.
5. Update your Quest 2 or restart it
Sometimes the software just glitches out, and the only way to fix it is with a patch (see updating Quest 2) or reboot (restarting it). When a new update for Quest 2 comes out, it may actually be the reason why your guardian is not saved as well, so if there was an update, there is a high chance that you will have to set it up again, and it is not much you can do if this is the case.
